VIA, an affordable apartment community developed in two phases, has revitalized a formerly vacant, city-owned lot within the Carson Street corridor, one of the City of Carson’s major thoroughfares.

Phase 1, VIA 425, included 65 new apartment homes for families as well as on-site amenities for residents such as a 3,000 square foot community center that hosts social services such as after school programs and adult educational classes, a computer room, fitness room, children’s play area and laundry facilities. VIA 401 is located across a private drive from Phase I and completes the development with 40 new units.

The clean lines, careful massing and solid materiality of the contemporary California architecture reinforce an urban edge along Carson Street that creates a vibrant street environment and encourages pedestrian activity. Organized around an internal, central drive, which serves as the formal entry as well as garage and fire access, the plan places three and four-story townhouses on the main street and lower two-story units facing the adjacent single family neighborhood at the back. An interior courtyard provides a landscaped space for large families with children to enjoy the outdoors in a secure urban setting. The building is green point rated.
