Five Knolls, a master planned community 30 miles from Los Angeles, will include six distinctive new neighborhoods including an independent senior housing community of 154 homes. Community is the key concept for the senior neighborhood. In addition to the residences, the site will be home to a Senior Center and a YMCA linked by a pedestrian pathway.
Making independent senior housing a part of the larger master planned community allows seniors to remain a dynamic part of a cohesive, multigenerational community, and, at the same time, enjoy living in homes that are designed around their lifestyles and changing needs.
The design leverages location, lot size and interior layouts to create homes that encourage an active lifestyle with great rooms and spacious master suites on the first floor and flexible lofts and guest rooms above. With Aging in Place in mind, plans incorporate wider doors, minimum thresholds, backing for grab bars in the bathroom, and conveniently located outlets — features that would meet or exceed the standard requirements for disabled access.
Co-locating the new community facilities adjacent to senior housing creates a synergy of uses that reinforces the intergenerational nature of the entire development, and is particularly supportive of its senior population.
