POV: Point of View

Torrance: Creative City

Jan 2014

You’ve seen the articles: "America’s Healthiest Cities" or “The 10 Best Places to Retire." They usually document an interesting, if narrow, view of city life. A recent piece on the Movoto Real Estate blog caught our attention when it listed our hometown of Torrance as #5 on its "Most Creative Mid-Sized Cities in America" list.

Comparing the 100 second most populous cities, read mid-sized, in the US against seven criteria:

  • Art supply stores per capita
  • Musical instruments stores and teachers per capita
  • alleries per capita
  • Art schools per capita
  • Bookstores per capita
  • Colleges/universities per capita
  • Theaters per capital

The author finds that Torrance scores well on most counts with numerous outlets for creative activity.

Working here and living here (or nearby in the South Bay) we agree and would suggest that the area has much to offer, from quality residential properties to a vibrant business community. And Withee Malcolm Architects has been a part of making this city an even better place to live and work.

It’s been said that you can’t swing a cat in Torrance without hitting one of our projects and it may be true. In just the last few years, we have been involved in a range of projects including Village on Oak and Foundry Lofts condominiums, Honda R&D’s Acura Design Studio and the Torrance Freeway Business Center, where our offices are located.

Come see what a creative, mid-sized city is like, come see us.
